I enjoy the fact that serving you as your President of the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association causes me to wear many hats. Although, the last few weeks I feel as if I have been a "one trick pony" ........Build-PAC politics.
Were you able to make it to the day on the capitol in Oklahoma City? If not, you should try and attend next year.
Builders AND Associates walked the halls and discussed our "takings" issue and the Fire Sprinkler mandate issue. We obviously talked about all the various tax reform initiatives being debated. Progress was made and friendships were renewed. Heck, we even had Speaker Brian Bingman attend our lunch and hosted by the Central Oklahoma HBA (COHBA). Thank you COHBA, you should be proud of your facilities.
The following week our legislative contact from NAHB, Steve Gallagher, came into town to attend our Spring Board meeting and lunch with Congressman Frank Lucas.
Spring Board was well attended and fantastic discussions were had about our Insurance Program, Green Building, a resolution of support for our new NAHB 3rd Vice Chair candidate Ed Brady, our legislative initiatives and our upcoming summer convention. (Be sure to read all of this as there is tremendous news about the summer convention.) There was even a tough discussion of a dues increase vote that will be on the Summer Board agenda. (It takes 2 votes and this was approved unanimously at the meeting, more to follow.)
Congressman Frank Lucas spoke to the Board and reinforced the fact that he is a friend of the building industry. His district is composed mainly of western Oklahoma and heavily agricultural based; landowner rights are a common thread. Congressman Lucas sits on the Financial Services committee and is supportive of Freddie-Mac and Fannie-Mae. With GSE legislation probable, we must make sure we have a secondary mortgage market.
While the Congressman was in attendance we were able to give him a small contribution to his reelection efforts. This is YOUR BUILD PAC dollars work and they are important. Please give today!
